Nikki: How long have you practiced yoga and what other forms of exercise do you like to do?
Rickie: I’ve been practicing yoga on and off for about 20 years. However, about two years ago I committed to my yoga practice with a lot more regularity and it has really helped me physically and spiritually. I alternate hot yoga with barre class. The combination of the two is a great way to build lean muscle and works for my body. As I get older, I want to be strong without bulking. I also find it helps to take a day off during the week.
Nikki: What brought you to YogaSpark?
Rickie: I love a hot room. Once I started at YogaSpark I was hooked. I love the instructors, they all have different qualities, each with his/her own style. The music gives me that extra push and makes working out fun and light- not as serious. The laid back atmosphere is a bonus.
Nikki: What is your favorite pose to practice and why?
Rickie: I love warrior 2. It makes me feel empowered, confident and like a total bad ass. However, each day I’m on the mat my body feels different. Some days I crave positions that will stretch my hamstrings and other days a good hip opening pose will completely de-stress me.
Nikki: Can you give a word or phrase that describes yoga to you?
Rickie: Just breathe. I really try to take this mantra on and off the mat. When I’m feeling anxious, it allows me to think before I react. A yoga teacher once reminded our class that you can’t control other people as much as you want to...so it’s how you receive their behavior and process it that you can move on. I think about this all the time. It relates to breathing though a pose and any situation in life.
